Tuning

I have tuned in private homes, schools, live performance stages, recording studios, Broadway pits, and churches. Recently, as a team member of the Yamaha Corporation of America in Buena Park, CA, I developed a regime for the preparation of new pianos on a showroom floor that has proved effective in eliminating complaints from piano buyers.

Action Regulation

I have had the good fortune to learn under outstanding technicians at Yamaha and in the New York City area. This has allowed me to evaluate the mechanical realities of a piano’s action geometry quickly and accurately. I can improve a piano’s dynamic range, touch, and repetition speed. In addition to properly lubricating necessary components, I can identify the effects of wear and age on the action geometry, then perform a regulation protocol of 37 steps as developed by LaRoy Edwards.

Voicing

A common answer to the complaint “What is wrong with my piano?” involves an instrument’s voicing. Broadly defined as manipulation of the hammer felt, shape, and rigidity, voicing is an important factor, especially in performance pianos. In my experience, however, the wide mutability of the action geometry often has a more profound impact on the piano’s tone than poking hammers with needles or filling them up with lacquer, especially over time. My approach is to fully exploit the action geometry as elemental to the voice of an instrument. I approach voicing through regulation, then work with the hammer felt from there.

Fleet Pianos

I have developed a systematic program to stabilize a fleet of instruments across an annual timeline. In my twenty years of overseeing backline instruments in continuous service in the New York City area, I have learned to pay particular attention to the control of environmental temperature and humidity, the cleanliness of the environment, the frequency and manner of moving instruments, and on-site preparation.

Disklavier

I am experienced in the troubleshooting and repair of Disklavier systems from Mark 3 to Enspire. This includes network connectivity, Apple TV integration, MusicSoft and Yamaha Hybrid piano optimization, system calibration, and Remote Lesson setup.

Action Restoration

I offer Wippen replacement, hammer replacement, restringing, keytop replacement, and general troubleshooting.
